STUDIO WORK: Mauerstraße Occupation

The Mauerstraße Wall Street Occupation edition:  ‘Mauerstraße’ literally translates to ‘Wall Street’- a Berlin street that converges with Friedrichstraße and Zimmerstraße at what was once Checkpoint Charlie, a crossing point in the Berlin Wall.  The motif, as explained in an earlier post, is also adapted from the Laibach LP “Occupied Europe” featuring a cartographic rendition of a Georg Kolbe sculpture.   The usage of NSK / Laibach Kunst themes is becoming more appropriate (and prophetic?) in light of current Occupation activities worldwide.

Documentation of graphic works in progress printed RE: Occupy Wall Street.  The motif, "Ihr seid

nicht umsonst gefallen" (1914-1918) by Georg Kolbe, is also used in Laibach Kunst works and is most recognizable from the Laibach LP Occupied Europe 1985.

The photographs, taken between silkscreened layers, add an element of cartographic

illusion to Kolbe's stoic warriors:

IRWIN ² + NSK SQUARED

The Revolution will be framed.

The following images are illustrative of the framing style of paintings by the NSK group IRWIN, elements constructed of wood, black tar, blood, coal, gold leaf and various other materials, both precious and proletarian.

While framing is often considered by many to be a secondary element, or something that 'gets done' to art, the case here is quite the opposite; the frame and the artworks are intrinsically linked to each other.

In fact, later IRWIN works exemplify a significant conveyance of content by the surrounding elements, a dichotomy created by organic sculptural-relief that contrasts with the minimal suprematist picture plane.  This counterpoint creates a tension of simultaneous defiance and unity within the finished work.

In the spirit of FLUXUS artist George Mačiūnas' pixelated self-portrait, the same was rendered into a QR code that links up to a digital version of the original:

STUDIO WORK: BIOMETRIC SUPREMATISM

Further consideration of electronic travel symbolism.  This biometrics symbol featured

on modern passports indicates invisible information contained therein.  As a component of

identification the biometric device can contain various and extensive elements of individual

and national identity.  As a totalitarian tool it possesses the means of electronically tracking

the bearer's movements across the planet.

With a small addition it has been altered to reflect an icon of abstraction

by Kazimir Malevich and amplified by Neue Slowenische Kunst.

(This code can be scanned right off the screen).

Each code will be customized to a visual element or department of the NSK State.  The final

iteration of the project will include a virtual art exhibition that, like the NSK State,

will defy any sense of physical boundaries.

Exemplar of a series of prints being created in conjuction with the

NSK valise project (collaboration with the Retrogarde Reading Room):

The increased usage of QR codes with smart phones inspired the creation of

a means to electronically connect seamlessly with web elements of the NSK State.

This is a fully functional code to direct the traveler / citizen

to www.nskstate.com, though its efficacy as such on brown paper is yet untested.
