INSTRUMENTS OF THE STATE MACHINE

This year's New Haven Citywide Open Studios Alternative Space will be held at the New Haven Armory on Goffe Street.  To commemorate the 1930 Armory and the military band that performed there, the slogan of this year's event is Réveillé. Working within this theme (and subsequent size restrictions) was facilitated by cadging and re-assembling many marching band instruments - nationalistic 'instruments' in and of themselves. The artist played Laibach's album of anthems, Volk, continuously for inspiration.
The result is an impossible, daDa-esque object that celebrates the machine age beauty of repetitive cylindrical forms, embraces the simultaneously unifying and divisive traits of national anthems, and bears a title that lends homage to the LAIBACH exhibition document

In an unexpected stroke of good fortune, the work will be displayed in a section of the gallery with yellow painted walls, not unlike the 2011 NSK Folk Art exhibition held at the Galerija Škuc in Ljubljana, Slovenija.
