ELEMENTS OF CONTROL - PLURAL MONOLITH

This is the first published image of the artist david K's recent sojourn, which started in Moscow and concluded in Berlin in the fall of 2013.

The 'triptych' simultaneously depicts three significant elements of control from modern history in a single frame: a closed-circuit surveillance camera mounted to the side of the former Nazi Ministry of Aviation (or Reichsluftfahrtministerium), seen through a hole in the still-extant Berlin Wall standing on Wilhelmstrasse.
The physical and psychological weights of stone elements in this work are reminiscent of the title of Dr. Alexei Monroe's monograph Pluralni monolit (Plural Monolith), which served as the photograph's de facto name during processing.

INSTRUMENTS OF THE STATE MACHINE

This year's New Haven Citywide Open Studios Alternative Space will be held at the New Haven Armory on Goffe Street.  To commemorate the 1930 Armory and the military band that performed there, the slogan of this year's event is Réveillé. Working within this theme (and subsequent size restrictions) was facilitated by cadging and re-assembling many marching band instruments - nationalistic 'instruments' in and of themselves. The artist played Laibach's album of anthems, Volk, continuously for inspiration.
The result is an impossible, daDa-esque object that celebrates the machine age beauty of repetitive cylindrical forms, embraces the simultaneously unifying and divisive traits of national anthems, and bears a title that lends homage to the LAIBACH exhibition document

The work will be on display the entire month of October at:

In an unexpected stroke of good fortune, the work will be displayed in a section of the gallery with yellow painted walls, not unlike the 2011 NSK Folk Art exhibition held at the Galerija Škuc in Ljubljana, Slovenija.

ELI WHITNEY MUSEUM LEONARDO CHALLENGE

Annually the Eli Whitney Museum celebrates invention and innovation with a fundraiser named for Leonardo da Vinci.

This year, the theme of 'the brush' inspired this entry - noting the role of the brush in the work of another great inventor of all time, Nikola Tesla.  Here, Tesla is immortalized in Byzantium Icon style with a halo engineered from a brushless polyphase AC induction motor armature:
